How to Begin The Cursed Rogue Tall Tale

You cannot begin The Cursed Rogue Tall Tale without first completing The Shroudbreaker Tall Tale.

After completing The Shroudbreaker Tall Tale, head to Plunder Outpost. Once there, talk to the Order of Souls representative, Madame Olivia, and then interact with the book to the left of her. It should prompt you to vote on The Cursed Rogue, which will formally begin your journey matey.

She tasks you with destroying the abomination known as Briggsy. But first, we examine our new Tall Tales journal we've received. Inside, you'll find two stories: one about a key and one about the chest. You'll need the key to open the chest so let's go after that first. Savvy?

How to Find the Skeleton Key

The Skeleton Key can be found on any of the islands in Sea of Thieves. The island your key is assigned to is random every session and as a result, we can't direct you straight to the key, but we can give you some tips to help you find it.

  • The first story in the journal will lead you to the key.
  • It won't outright say which island the key can be found — you'll need to use the story as clues for where to go.
  • The second page (the page on the right) will include the biggest clue as it'll tell you which part of the map to search in. It could be the Southern Isles, the Ancient Isles, or somewhere else entirely.
  • The key is the image on the left page and the island you're looking for is the image on the right.
  • You'll need to sail to the area of the map the page on the right directs you to and then keep an eye out for the island pictured on the page.
  • Once you arrive to the island that the journal leads you to, turn the page and you'll see two more pages with sketches. These two pages will give you hints of where the key is actually at.
  • The page might say the crew camped out at night atop the island — check the top of the island for a campfire.
  • The page might say the crew hid inside a cave for the night, only to be attacked and killed there — check the cave for the key.
  • These two pages will lead you to the whereabouts of the key.
  • When you arrive to the whereabouts, you'll find Captain Avery and his skeleton crew. Defeat them to obtain the Skeleton Key.

Once you've acquired the key, it's time to track down the Skeleton Chest.

How to Find the Skeleton Chest

The Skeleton Chest can be found on any of the islands in Sea of Thieves. The island your chest is assigned to is random every session and as a result, we can't direct you straight to the key, but we can give you some tips to help you find it.

  • The second story in your journal will lead you to the key.
  • It won't outright say which island the chest can be found — you'll need to use the story as clues for where to go.
  • The first two pages in the story will lead you to the island.
  • You'll need to sail to the area of the map these pages direct you to and then keep an eye out for an island that matches the one pictured on the left page.
  • The next couple of pages will explain where to find the chest on the island that you've arrived at.
  • The fifth image in the second story of the journal will be the biggest clue for where to look: for example, if you get Thieves' Island, you'll see a picture with three heads that have glowing eyes on them. That's what you're looking for on Thieves haven.
  • Unlike the Skeleton Key, you'll need to dig to find the Skeleton Chest. Dig in front of wherever the fifth picture leads you.
  • You will likely run into Captain Blake at the digging spot. Take him and his crew out first to make digging up the chest easier.

Once you have the Skeleton Chest, use the Skeleton Key to open it and you'll find Briggsy's Star Map and Briggsy's Broken Spyglass.

Take both of these items to Madame Olivia at Plunder Outpost.

How to Get the Enchanted Compass

Once you've made it to Madame Olivia at Plunder Outpost, give her both the Spyglass and the Star Map and she'll perform a ritual to create an Enchanted Compass. This compass only points to Captain Briggsy and that be where we're heading.

Let's do that now, savvy.

How to Find Captain Briggsy

To find Captain Briggsy, simply follow the Enchanted Compass. You'll likely need to sail to an island — it could be any island — and it's best to set your ship's wheel in the direction the compass is pointing and then step off of it to watch the compass.

When you finally arrive to whatever island the compass takes you to, keep the compass in hand and step onto the island. Follow the arrow all the way to Captain Briggsy.

How to Defeat Captain Briggsy

When you arrive to Briggsy's location, you'll find her talking with two other skeletons sitting on the ground. This is a great chance to pop off a good pistol shot or two at her. After you do that, she'll attack.

She has three attacks to watch for:

  • Ground Pound: if you see Captain Briggsy begin to levitate, run away — she's about to do a massively-damaging ground pound attack with AOE damage.
  • Disappear: If you see Captain Briggsy with a green skull in her hand, she's about to teleport to somewhere else. Look around for her name because if you see it, you can attack, even if she hasn't fully come to yet.
  • Sword Attack: Ever so often, Captain Briggsy will simply attack with her sword. Deflect or block it as you would any sword attack.
  • Pistol Shot: Sometimes Captain Briggsy will take aim with her pistol at you. Try to hide behind something before she shoots you.
  • Resurrection: Captain Briggsy will often resurrect some of the skeletons laying about and this is why you should mostly focus on attacking her — only attack skeletons when they're absolutely in your way because Briggsy will likely resurrect them in a few moments anyway.

Once you defeat Captain Briggsy, she'll drop Briggsy's Skull. Take this skull to Madame Olivia.

Where to Bring Captain Briggsy's Skull

Once you've defeated Captain Briggsy, she'll drop the Briggsy's Skull item. Make sure to pick this up because you need to bring it to Madame Olivia on Plunder Outpost in order to complete this Tall Tale.
