If you’re shopping for a used Ford F-150, you’re probably looking for a rugged truck that’s powerful enough to handle your hauling and towing needs. Still, you may have other must-have features on your list, such as a reliable rearview camera to help you maneuver this large pickup truck with confidence.
What are some of the most commonly reported Ford F-150 backup camera problems?
Unfortunately, there are quite a few, with issues including:
- Backup camera sensor failure
- Backup camera display problems
- Backup camera delay
As you shop for a pre-owned Ford F-150 with a backup camera, you’ll want to be aware of these issues and their possible repairs. We’ve outlined each problem below, so you can get a better idea of what to look for.
More About the Ford F-150 Backup Camera
Ford first began offering optional backup cameras on select models for the 2007 model year. However, by the 2018 model year, all vehicles in the United States were required to come with a standard backup camera. This included the Ford F-150, the brand’s popular pickup truck.
If you’re looking at used F-150 models made prior to 2018, you may be able to find some that were equipped with the optional backup camera when sold new.
In these models, the camera display is located in the center dashboard. Some models may also have cameras equipped with digital guidelines as well.
If you’re looking at an F-150 model 2018 or later, it should be equipped with a factory-installed rearview camera.
However, specific features can vary. Some F-150s were available with an innovative 360-degree backup camera for added visibility, though this feature is not standard.

Unfortunately, earlier models of the F-150 that were equipped with the rearview camera when sold new came with their share of problems, as is evidenced in some VehicleHistory.com reviews and YouTube tutorials for diagnosing backup camera issues in the 2013 F-150.
In one VehicleHistory.com review by Carrie H. posted in February of 2020, it is reported that “the sensor for the backup camera stopped working.”
Another reviewer, Nick F., posted in October of 2018 that the backup camera on his F-150 also broke with less than 60,000 miles on the odometer.

Backup camera problems have also been commonly reported on the 2014 F-150, which uses the same rearview camera and software as the 2013 model.
One VehicleHistory.com review by Justin F. posted in September of 2019 reports that “the backup camera does not work all the time.”
The owner claims that he has taken the truck in to be looked at by a mechanic, but they have not been able to diagnose the problem. It seems to happen most often when the outdoor temperature is high.

It also seems that the 2015 Ford F-150 has some issues with its backup camera, specifically, as it pertains to the camera’s display screen. In one VehicleHistory.com review from July of 2020, Kemi A. posts that “the front camera malfunctions at times, and the screen in the dash malfunctions.”
This issue is also brought up by reviewer Hannah F, who reports that it will sometimes take anywhere from five to 10 minutes for her backup camera to start up.
Another reviewer, Bruno L., writes that although his camera seems to work well enough, the placement of the camera lens could be improved. He reports that “it tends to collect rain and dirt,” which can obstruct the view.

The 2016 Ford F-150’s backup camera apparently suffers from a wiring issue that can affect the display. This is brought up in one review by Brandy D. posted in September of 2019. However, she claims that her Ford dealer fixed the problem quickly and that it has been the only issue with her truck so far.
Errors and wiring issues with the 2016 F-150’s rearview camera still seem to be relatively common, with this YouTube video covering the problem and providing some possible diagnostic tips and repair options.
